Leaf Trade is the leading wholesale marketplace between licensed cannabis cultivators/processors and dispensaries in regulated cannabis states. The company’s B2B technology powers orders, fulfillment, and payment processing.

Cannabiz Media recently spoke with Leaf Trade President Michael Piermont to learn how he and the team at Leaf Trade use the Cannabiz Media License Database for research, strategic planning, and more.

Why Does Leaf Trade Subscribe to the Cannabiz Media License Database?

Leaf Trade subscribes to the Cannabiz Media License Database for a variety of strategic planning purposes, including growth planning. “We definitely use it for research,” shares Michael. “We are very focused on our order of operations, and there’s a plan of what markets we go to when and why.”

Market sizing and opportunity are easier for the Leaf Trade team to nail down using the data in the Cannabiz Media License Database. Michael explains, “We use the Cannabiz Media License Database as we plan out markets. When you start using the License Database and plug in what licenses connect to where, that’s when it get’s interesting. That’s how we start our research in all markets.”

What’s Next for Leaf Trade?

Leaf Trade is focused on strategic growth in the future. “We’ve really gotten the majority of license holders east of Colorado, and we own Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts,” says Michael. “We’ve started focusing on the west coast. We’ve started to flip Arizona and Nevada. We’re looking to Colorado and California soon, and then, we’ll add in Michigan.”

Leaf Trade has a track record of expansion success and a plan to continue a deliberate growth strategy. Michael shares, “We haven’t picked a bad market yet, and by bad, I mean a market that doesn’t fit Leaf Trade. We go slow and steady. The thing we don’t want to do is adhere to the market pressure and open up markets before we’re ready. We’ve never lost a customer, so we want to make sure we keep the experience as good as it’s always been for our customers.”

The team at Leaf Trade is also conscious of the continuous changes happening in the cannabis industry and the pressure for fast growth. “Now that cannabis is getting really big,” explains Michael, “we’re seeing a lot of new people come into the industry very quickly and being thrown into the fire. The focus is getting wider and there’s more quote unquote non-cannabis people who come into the industry and bring a lot more energy and insight.

“But I think there’s also a challenge – even if you look at a lot of the MSOs – growing that fast that quickly is hard. It’s a challenge to stay focused when the industry’s focus is getting wider, but we’re making sure we stick to our core value proposition.”
