Bond Saves The Movies

Can you hear it?

That’s the sound of a huge sigh of relief from movie theater owners world wide.

Audiences are coming back.

This weekend, not surrounded by a holiday, saw the “Venom” sequel do $90 million in gross box office revenues in the U.S., while the reliable James Bond gunned $119 million in 54 overseas territories.

Call it confidence in the vaccine or pandemic fatigue, people are literally sick and tired of staying home.

These monster genres are tried and true audience favorites, but Bond won’t return for probably 3 to 5 years.

So, the question remains, with ubiquitous content streaming into homes now, what kind of films will keep the crowds coming back.

Will they come back for Joel Cohen’s take on that Scottish play? What happened to the musical “Dear Evan Hanson” which was a Broadway hit but did only $2.5M in movie theaters last week?

William Goldman famously said “Nobody knows anything” when it comes to what draws an audience, and it’s even more true now.

While the pandemic is a major contributor, the studios were pushing the theatrical “window” for the past few years, so it’s still anyone’s guess as to what people will pay for a single title.

No matter how big your TV is, there’s still nothing like watch Bond in a theater.
