Black Dog Weed Strain Information and Review

Black Dog Weed Strain Information and Review

Source Node: 2675124

For centuries, the term “the black dog” has been a metaphor for depression, with even Winston Churchill using the reference to describe his long bouts of emotional despair. Thankfully, though the dog presented here may be the same color, it’s definitely a whole other breed.

The Black Dog strain (also referred to as Black D.O.G.) may very well be the polar opposite of depression, described by the breeder as a cultivar that would uplift anyone. The euphoric and invigorating effects of the Black Dog weed strain have won it multiple awards in the Karma Cup and High Times World Cup. This resin-filled strain also has a mid-to-high THC level, inviting all smokers to try it – veterans and newbies alike.

Black Dog strain genetics

The Black Dog weed strain should not be confused with the Black Widow/Star Dawg offspring called Black Dawg. Humboldt’s Black Dog strain genetics are quite different, blending two indica dominant heavyweights: Blackberry Kush and Emerald Headband.

Blackberry Kush is the skunky offspring of Afghani and Blackberry with a 20% THC left hook that delivers a strong euphoric high. This strain’s compact size and mold resistance have made it favorable amongst indoor growers.

  • 80% indica 20% sativa
  • THC levels up to 20%
  • Perfect for indoors due to its compact size
  • Blackberry taste and a euphoric effect

Emerald Headband is a creative merging of Emerald OG with Headband, which is then backcrossed with Emerald OG again. The result is an indica-dominant hybrid with a sour citrusy flavor complemented by rich, earthy spice and diesel. It has 23% THC to sweeten the pot… pun intended.

Is Black Dog strain indica or sativa

The legendary Humboldt Seed Company originally bred the Black Dog cannabis strain, an indica-dominant hybrid with an 85:15 ratio. Though gauging by the effects alone, you’d never know if the Black Dog strain was sativa or indica leaning. It typically delivers a relaxing high, though some phenotypes invoke more energizing effects.

Growing Black Dog strain

With the Black Dog strain, regular seeds and a little know-how are all you need for great growing. This easy-to-grow cultivar has natural vigor and resilience, and you’ll easily get seeds at a great price. Its relatively short flowering time also greatly reduces the chances of infection from mold or disease.

It grows wonderfully indoors and in a greenhouse and flourishes in semi-humid Mediterranean climates. Growers say it also does well in colder climates. And, if you’ve got the space, it can be an outside dog too. But it likes to stretch, reaching up to 6.5 ft in height – so be ready.

The Black Dog strain pics online don’t compare to seeing this visually stunning plant in person. From the branch to the baggie, its trichome-coated nugs maintain their appeal. Bright red and orange colored hairs litter the surface of the dense, forest-green buds with a strong presence of purple hues that add to the plant’s visual spectacle. You should prune regularly to keep the thick foliage under control – especially if you’re growing indoors. Keeping a Black Dog strain grow diary is a great way to log information and track your plant’s progress.

Black Dog strain flowering time

Compared to the average marijuana strain, Black Dog has a shorter flowering time than most.

You can look forward to a short flowering time of around 7-8 weeks (48-55 days) indoors. Outdoors, you can expect to harvest in late September/early October.

Black Dog strain autoflowering time

The autoflowering version of Black Dog, like most autoflowers, starts blooming very early. Because it doesn’t require light deprivation to start flowering, expect the first buds to appear after four to six weeks. Black Dog autoflowers can be harvested after ten to fourteen weeks. That makes its (auto)flowering time between four and ten weeks long.

Black Dog strain yield

The average yield of any cannabis plant depends on several factors, including the skill of the cultivator, growing conditions, strain genetics, and size and health of the plant. It also differs between photoperiod and autoflower plants. However, you can use general estimates as a potential yield per plant guideline.

For photoperiod plants, this is 16-64 ounces (450-1814 grams) outdoors and 8-24 ounces (227-680 grams) indoors.

Black Dog strain autoflowering yield

The potential yield per plant for autoflowering plants is 1.7-7 ounces (50-200 grams) outdoors and 1.7-4.2 ounces (50-120 grams) indoors.

Black Dog strain effects

A consistent theme throughout comments left on Black Dog strain reviews is its slow, creeping effects. Consumers say it starts with a cerebral buzz before settling into a body high, washing away any stress and worry until you’re completely relaxed and at ease. You’ll still maintain mental focus and productivity without that overwhelming body-stone feeling.

The hybrid’s 16-21% THC level provides a high suitable for all smokers. Its uplifting, euphoric effects invoke creativity, serenity, and happiness, bringing physical, mental, and emotional relief. Side effects include dry and red eyes, thirst, and munchies. Couchlock is also possible. Less common effects include a sense of time dilations, heightened sensory perception, and mild paranoia – especially when you overconsume. Black Dog’s scrumptious flavor makes it easy to go overboard, so pace yourself.

Black Dog strain terpenes

The Black Dog weed strain’s dominant terpenes include myrcene, caryophyllene, bisabolol, ocimene, and phellandrene. These are responsible for not only the strain’s physical benefits but also its mouthwatering flavor and fragrances.

The terpenes blend to give the Black Dog Cannabis strain a layered and flavorful smoking experience. Its initial scent is woody and earthy, and fresh pine and musk are released once crushed. Black Dog smokes smooth, and the flavors deepen further on the exhale, presenting flavors of citrus and berries, giving it a sweet flavor to round off.
