Best mods for Terraria

Terraria is known for its abundance of content and insane creative potential. It’s hard to play Terraria without getting overwhelmed at some point with the sheer vastness of it. Well, if you wanted to expand on that, then let me show you some of the best mods for the game.

The best Terraria mods out there

Like the game, the modding community for Terraria is huge. It is simply impossible to have a list that fully encompasses every single of the best mods for the game, so take this list as more of a highlight. Also make note that what’s generally considered the best mod for Terraria might not be to your taste, so make sure to dip your toes in the waters of other mods, too.

This list is curated from player discourse and my own vast experience with the game. It covers mods that adds even more insanity, to an improved quality of life. So extreme is this list that I’m not going to rank it, as the mods improve the game in such different ways that they’re not really compatible.

Terraria Overhaul

Instead of adding a bunch of ne items like other overhaul mods, Terraria Overhaul focuses on improving current features and adding new gameplay mechanics, to transform the way Terraria is played. It does a fantastic job of reworking existing features and elevating the game’s functions. If you’re looking for a completely new way to play the game, rather than just new items, then you simply must try out this mod. Due to the nature of Terraria Overhaul, it may not be compatible with many other mods, so be careful.

Calamity

Calamity is a mod that adds more on every metric. With 24 new bosses, 275 new enemies, over 1,800 items, six new biomes, and even 5 new difficulty levels, Calamity outdoes itself. it’ll be like experiencing a completely different game, with so much being added to the already overwhelming game. One thing that Calamity interesting adds is post-game content after defeating the Moon Lord, to keep players at every level happy.

Thorium

Like Calamity, Thorium is a Terraria mod all about adding more to the extreme, although this mod focuses less on the combat, and more on the exploration. With over 2,700 new items, 10 new Town NPCs, 3 new classes, 2 new biomes, and much more, your life in the world of Terraria will never have felt so fulfilling. If you’re not fussed with the boss fights, then Thorium is a must-have.

Enigma!

Enigma! caught my eye as I had never expected a Steampunk mod for Terraria. Despite this, Enigma! creates a very mystical atmosphere and adds new bosses and even lore to the game (eat your heart out, MatPat!). Also adding new classes, there really is more than meets the eye. If you’re looking for a unique and industrial lens to experience Terraria through, then look no further.

Super Terraria World

Unfortunately, Super Terraria World is not currently playable. I’m including it to this list because not only does it still deserve to be noticed for the insane mod that it is, but also it may become available one day. Super Terraria World transforms the game into more of a classic MMORPG game. Interestingly, you can’t really mine as a lot of the world can’t be destroyed. That is replaced by puzzles and exceptions, however.

The Story Of Red Cloud

The Story OF Red Cloud is less of a mod, and more of an entirely new game that uses Terraria as an engine. An RPG experience, you’ll be playing a unique story inspired by Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda. With new bosses and enemies, you’ll soon realise that you are no longer playing Terraria, but something utterly different.

Fargo’s Both Evils

Fargo’s Both Evils allows you to modify the set-up of the Terraria world, where you can make both the Crimson and the Corruption spawn. This will create a very different experience whilst keeping the game pretty much vanilla if you wanted to simply freshen up your gameplay. You can also do other things, such as invert the Underworld, or spawn in big Bee Hives.

Fargo’s Mutant Mod

Fargo’s Mutant Mod may only be a small addition, but so many players use it, so it had to have a space on this list. It adds the Mutant NPC that sells you boss spawns as well as other crazy items, like infinite ammos, or Skybridge infrastructure. you may find the Mutant’s commerce rather enticing.

Ore Excavator

Ore Excavator is the official v1.4 adaptation of Veinminer, a mod Terraria veterans may have expected a place on this list for. Ultimately, this mod is used for chain-mining whole veins of minerals and tiles. It is super handy for mining, and also for construction and building. It is super versatile and makes those two core functions very easy.

Recipe Browser

With an incredible list of crafting recipes for Terraria, the Recipe Browser mod makes this process a lot more streamlined. This mod adds a search bar for recipe browsing, allowing you to quickly find crafting recipes to save you another trip to the wiki, which is really the only alternative. You can also apply filters to make this process even clearer.

Census

Census is a very simple yet incredible mod that provides a checklist of all the Town NPCs in Terraria. This checklist also tells you the prerequisites for every NPC to visit. If you often have to scour the wiki to make sure you know how to attract every NPC, then this mod will ease that burden.

Boss Checklist

In a similar fashion to Census, the Boss Checklist mod allows you to view a list of all bosses in Terraria, in the recommended order, too. Once a boss has been defeated for the first time, a satisfying cross will mark them as conquered.

Where’s my items

Where’s my items allows for a super convenient feature for players who have to rifle through all of their storage chests every time they need to craft something. Upon hitting a player-assigned hotkey, you can search nearby chests in search of a certain item. This means that you won’t even have to organise your chests anymore, as you can just search up where they are to locate them. Amazing.

Magic Storage

Magic Storage provides an alternative solution to your storage troubles to Where’s my items. What’s awesome about this mod, is that the Magic Storage itself (that you can access pretty much from anywhere if you build the appropriate block) must be upgraded for increased functionality. This means that it’ll scale with you as you progress.
