After taking superstar Shohei Ohtani off the trade market, the Angels have made a move to help them contend this season. The Angels acquired starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the White Sox. In return, the White Sox will receive prospects in catcher Edgar Quero and pitcher Ky Bush. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the news.

Giolito, 28, is a one-time All-Star who has spent his entire career with the White Sox. He has a 59-53 record and a 4.26 ERA in his career. This season, he is 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA.

Lopez is a 29-year-old who has played for the Nationals and White Sox in his career. He has 4.42 ERA in his career, but it is better this season at 4.29.

The move for more pitching should help the Angels contend for a playoff spot, as they have allowed 488 runs this season, which is second worst in the AL West. It will still be a tall task for them to make the playoffs, as they are four games out of the Wild Card.

Chicago is getting two AA players in Quero and Bush. Quero is currently ranked as the 65th-best prospect in MLB’s list of their top 100. Bush was ranked as the third-best Angels’ prospect, but not in the top 100. The White Sox are 41-62 now, which is worse than projected, so they are building for the future by going after prospects.
