Kia ora,

He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata! He tangata! He tangata!
What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people!

It is hard to believe just how fast this year has gone by!

Here at GCSN we wanted to take the opportunity to thank all of the wonderful schools, ākonga, project partners, whānau, and members of our wider community.
Your ongoing engagement and support is inspiring and we are already looking ahead to how we can continue and expand the opportunities available to you in 2024.

We would like to extend thanks to all of the people and organisations that we have worked with this year; the Spark Foundation for their ongoing support for the Ciena project, Christchurch City Libraries for delivering exciting digi tech opportunities for ākonga and partnering with us to deliver the Top of the Pods competition, Plains FM for their support and podcasting expertise during Top of the Pods, Matty Beatty for creating the Podcasting Playbook, all of our speakers, Sir Ian Taylor, Liam Krijgsman (Libraries), Anna Ross (Imagination Station), Hori-Te-Ariki Mataki (Ariki Creative), and Lauren Pugh (Science Alive) for their participation in the Putting the A Back in STEAM panel discussion, Wilj Dekkers for providing exciting, innovative digi tech-focused projects (keep your eyes peeled for more), and Emma Planicka and impactED for supporting several Ōtautahi schools through the provision of PLD.

Alongside you all, we have been able to deliver a wider range of opportunities than ever before and we can’t wait to see what comes next!

Stay in the loop about what is coming in 2024 on TwitterFacebook or via the GCSN website.

Noho ora mai rā,
The GCSN Team

The Top of the Pods Competition Showcase
The Top of the Pods podcasting competition was a great success with 10 teams across Ōtautahi creating incredible podcasts which showcased their podcasting skills. We were impressed by the high calibre of entries and can’t wait to see what these talented podcasters create as episode 2!

Alongside Christchurch City Libraries and Plains FM, we hosted the final showcase event on 8 November to celebrate every team’s entry and announce the competition winner who went home with a brand new podcasting kit for their school.

The prize winners were:

  1. South New Brighton School – Envirocast
  2. Selwyn House School – A Journey Through this Changing World
  3. Chisnallwood Intermediate School – The Chissy Chatters

The Huddle from Ao Tawhiti also received special mention for the professional quality and success of their ongoing podcast series.

If you are curious about podcasting or wanting to get started but are unsure how, be sure to check out The Podcasting Playbook now on the GCSN website. Created by Matty Beatty, The Podcasting Playbook is designed to support beginners to podcasting find their feet and create something amazing. Access these resources below.

Applications-based PLD
Throughout 2023 GCSN has been supporting Emma Planicka (Digital Learning PLD) to deliver digital technology-focused PLD as part of our applications-based PLD system. Schools across Ōtautahi share a digital technologies-related project that they are looking to receive support to implement and GCSN match them up with an appropriate provider. Emma Planicka has worked with a number of schools across Ōtautahi including Te Raekura Redcliffs, Mairehau Primary School, and Our Lady Star of the Sea (Sumner).
We have received wonderful feedback about what participants learnt from Emma’s sessions, showing the value of these projects to the schools involved:

“More knowledge and use of apps to further their learning. Engaging ways to get students to create and display their learning.” – Mairehau Primary School
“Becoming digitally fluent means ākonga have accesibility and ways to access and share learning that they may not have had before. It also provides a huge range of creative mediums to explore and deepen learning.” – OSLOS
“Emma has been exceptional in her support of plotting our vision for the coming years of investment, PLD and support needs.”  – Te Raekura Redcliffs

Keep an eye out for updates about the PLD opportunities GCSN will be supporting in 2024 to continue to support ākonga, kaiako and kura across Ōtautahi.
