Air Canada Cargo logs on to IATA’s digital rates platform

AIR CANADA Cargo has signed up to IATA Net Rates, the International Air Transport Association’s ground-breaking airfreight rates and capacity availability distribution platform, writes Thelma Etim.

Launched initially in the South Africa market last year, IATA Net Rates provides airlines with a secure, automated global channel that improves rates distribution and accuracy – irrespective of the technology they are currently utilising. One of the first major carriers to join the worldwide platform was IAG Cargo.

The digital system also makes it easier for an airline’s general sales agent (GSA) to distribute the carrier’s rates to local markets and freight forwarders. Such customers gain instant access to spot-rates, tariffs, schedules and capacity in real time – “without wasting time figuring out what surcharges apply, or if the billing they have received is accurate,” IATA stated in 2020.

The same platform manages ad-hoc requests and bookings, a benefit which allows cargo businesses to increase their margins even more. Forwarders will also receive compliance information that can be accessed online or integrated with customer systems, thereby accelerating the distribution of rates to market whilst simplifying and reducing the cost of rate handling procedures.

Matthieu Casey, senior director of cargo global sales and revenue optimisation for Air Canada Cargo, enthuses: “We are delighted to be working with IATA Net Rates as we continue our digital evolution. Through IATA Net rates, Air Canada Cargo will be able to securely automate its rate distribution to freight forwarders around the globe.

“This initiative comes at an opportune time for Air Canada Cargo as we grow our business with the upcoming arrival of new dedicated freighter aircraft,” he adds.

Frederic Leger, interim senior vice-president commercial services and president of CNS, the USA equivalent of IATA, notes: “IATA is very pleased to welcome Air Canada Cargo to the IATA Net Rates platform to support its cargo rates distribution processes. We look forward to future collaboration with [the Canadian carrier].”
