ACC Votes to Add Cal, Stanford and SMU

The ACC voted on Friday morning to add Cal, Stanford and SMU, which expands their current number of member schools to 18, with 17 in the conference for football. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news.

Cal and Stanford have been pushing to join a new conference since several other Pac-12 schools left the conference this offseason (although the moves won’t become official untill next season). SMU joined in on the opportunity and gives the ACC 17 schools for football and 18 for other sports (Notre Dame is an independent for football). Cal and Stanford will receive reduced revenue shares to start, while SMU will not take any revenue shares for the first seven years.

Adding the schools comes as other universities in the ACC look for new homes. Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina all have been rumored to be candidates to leave the conference. By adding Stanford, Cal and SMU now, the ACC could get a better pick of schools to add to their conference than if they have schools leaving later.

All schools will be in the conference (as of now) for the 2024 season. The ACC was working on a proposal that would only see schools travel to play Stanford and Cal once every other year.

These moves mean the Pac-12 is currently left with just Oregon State and Washington State in their conference.
