As of April 7, the 2020 college League of Legends season has been canceled, and no college champion will be crowned this year due to concerns over COVID-19.
“We explored a variety of alternatives over the last two months. Despite our best efforts and the input of our partners and RSAA Board of Advisors, we could not find a suitable alternative that was both fair and safe for all participants,” said the Riot Scholastic Association of America, or RSAA, in a statement.
Students across the country have moved home and many are facing circumstances that impact their ability to continue their school-related and extracurricular activities. Thirty percent of teams that were set to compete in the tournament playoffs are unable to field competitive rosters at this time, according to the RSAA.
The tournament’s scholarship prize pool will still be distributed. The Western Conference, Cal’s competitive region, will receive a total pool of $40,375 to be distributed between the eight schools that qualified for the playoffs.
