Nu verkrijgbaar op PS4 en PS5, Call of the Sea is een prachtig en boeiend puzzelavontuur

Originally released on Xbox and PC in December 2020, Roep van de zee has now made its way to PlayStation consoles. And if you’re yet to play this seafaring adventure, it’s well worth jumping into.

Roep van de zee casts you as Norah, a woman suffering from a mysterious illness. An illness so mysterious, in fact, that her husband Harry has set off on an around-the-world trip to find a cure. Except… he hasn’t come home. And, with their love being as strong as it is, Norah won’t simply accept that he’s lost. She sets out on her own adventure, following in his footsteps in the hope of finding him.

Washing up on the shore of a mysterious Polynesian island, what Norah does find is way more than she’d bargained for. Harry’s nowhere to be seen, but signs of him are all over the island, so Norah knows she’s close. She also knows she’s close to some very strange forces at work; this is no ordinary island she’s found herself on.

As Norah, you’ll explore the island, following a narrative that linearly leads you from one area to the next. This is no simple exploration game, though. In order to progress, you’ll need to solve a wealth of puzzles. Some of them are fairly straightforward while others will have you scratching your head for some time. Thankfully, Norah’s a vivacious note-taker, so anything remotely of interest, she’ll jot down in her notebook. As long as you’ve found everything that you need to find, most solutions will be available to you in Norah’s notebook. You just need to piece it together.

Playing on PS5, Roep van de zee looks magnificent. It boasts a somewhat hyper-realistic art style; colours are over the top, bold and bright, making way for an almost dreamlike scenescape that’s a wonder to behold. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t have any PS5-specific features at play. There’s no DualSense implementation to be found, which is a shame; a subtle rumble when you’ve solved a puzzle would go a long way.

Of course, if you’ve already played Roep van de zee on Xbox or PC, there’s nothing new here; it’s the same game, so don’t expect any bonus features or additional content. So unless you’re really keen to experience Norah’s plight for a second time, there’s no real reason to jump back in.

But if you’re a PlayStation gamer who has so far missed out, then this is one to definitely add to your library – particularly if you’re a puzzle fan. There’s a great range of head-scratchers on offer, and each time you complete one you’ll feel a sense of pride swell in your chest. They’re just the icing on the cake, though; it’s Norah’s journey, finding out what happened to Harry, and the mysteries of the island you find yourself on that will keep you playing.
