It looks like the typical character home Adelaide is renowned for but there is much more to this sandstone bungalow than meets the eye.

Step inside and it will fast become obvious the Hawthorn home at 26 Kent St is among the city’s most impressive – and it’s on the market.

A “no-expense spared” renovation and extension has transformed the 1925-built house into a modern and practical family home that’s sure to leave prospective buyers in awe.

Owners Darren and Lisa finished the renovation about 12 years ago after buying the property in 2009.

“With a growing family, we identified that we needed to extend it,” Darren says.

“There was no expense spared, and what I mean by that is it wasn’t meant to be sold.”

Darren says its unique design was carefully considered to make it both family friendly for their three children and practical for entertaining.

“The extension is a little bit different to that of the standard square off the back – it runs sideways down the property to take in the northern light,” he says.

“The house is very much an entertaining home, it’s very unique.”

The five-bedroom residence is on a 690sq m block in one of Hawthorn’s most desirable streets.

The original part of the house at the front has four bedrooms – including one with an office and kitchenette – with a 3m-wide entry hall running through the middle.

The light-filled hall with intricate fretwork and feature chandeliers leads to the expansive main living area.

The open kitchen, living and dining area – which has a feature modern fireplace – flows seamlessly outside to an undercover entertainment area with a barbecue kitchen and a pool. Darren says the pool was strategically placed so they could still see their children swimming while they were in the kitchen or living area.

“The pool is integrated into the alfresco and living space, making it seamless from all angles – it’s part of the living space,” he says.

At the rear of the property is the master bedroom with ensuite, which resembles a luxury hotel suite.

Darren says having the bedrooms at opposite ends of the house allows everyone to have their space, while the main living areas in the middle bring them all together.

They love the home but Darren says it’s much too big now some of their children have moved out.

“We’d love to see it go to another family, that’s the way we designed it,” he says.

“The space was created to bring family and friends together.”
