Why Are So Many People Switching On Subtitles?

I have significant hearing loss (rock n’ roll!), so I always turn on the Closed Captioning on my TV. Not only can I read the dialog I might otherwise miss, I have discovered that CC also offers you things like whispered dialog you wouldn’t otherwise hear, lyrics to songs, and fun sound cues like “distant knickering” and “heavy sensual breathing.”

But, it turns out, lots of people with normal hearing are turning to CC just because they feel they’re missing too much dialog. In this Vox video, they talk to Austin Olivia Kendrick, a dialogue editor, to find out why modern movie/TV dialog can sometimes be hard to hear.
