[Recap] AxiePH Meetup: Axie Infinity Plans to Spend Its Second Bear Market Building Alongside its Fans

• Attendees braved the unexpected rain to show up at the first official Axie Infinity meetup in the Philippines. 
• If the meetup at VS Barcade is any indication, it is that Sky Mavis will once again choose to spend the next years of bear market building together with its supporters and fans, but now with a product out, a still very large userbase, a network of creators, and massive name recall to tap into.

June 14, 2022. I arrived fairly early at the VS Barcade Bar in BGC together with the BitPinas team just as everyone else had begun to form a line. 

Our plan was to interview members of the Axie Community, from Laya Gaming, a finalist of the recently concluded Axie Cup, to Extra Rai one of the most popular streamers today, to Andrew Campbell, Axie’s Esports Lead who we interviewed live before.

Entering VS Barcade, we were immediately certain that those plans were not possible. As the name implies, it’s a bar and an arcade in one place. It was very loud, but everyone was having a great time.

The meetup tickets sold out in 10 minutes, and the VS Barcade could only accommodate enough people. While not everyone was able to attend, I like to think that at least every facet of the local Axie community has a representation in the meetup. From Guild manager Spraky and the YGG team, to competitive players Hezelya and Sushinobi, recent Axie Origin Cup champion ADRD, to Axie Coach Laya Gaming, the representatives from web3 project Play It Forward DAO, Franco and Julia from Coins.ph, scholars, game streamer Extra Rai, to celebrity and entrepreneur Myrtle Sarrosa. 

The Sky Mavis team was also at the event, topped build by Axie Lima, their Lead for Latin America, who efficiently danced with everyone, and Zyori who engaged on discussions with anyone who approached him. Good thing we were able to catch him outside the meetup space together with Myrtle.

Of course I don’t know everyone, and I’m not sure of the who’s who in the Axie esports scene (sorry @esportsaxie) but I am a fan of Laya Gaming and his strategy of patiently irritating his opponents with emojis. Of Extra Rai, what you see during his stream is the same person you’ll meet in real life. The BitPinas team fanboyed and fangirled to Hezelya. While I capped the night with a very long conversation with Spraky.

If there was one person I wish I saw at the event, it was Kookoo Crypto TV, arguably the person who introduced Axie to the most number of Filipinos. (In a tweet I recently saw, it appeared that he was advised to take a rest because of a medical operation.)

But while the mood was very festive at VS Barcade (a welcome relief from the bear market, I thought,) it is impossible to not read about the increasingly negative coverage of Axie Infinity across media, from reputable sites to bloggers.

It was impossible not to encounter the abusive tweets hurled against Nix Eniego, the Philippines lead of Sky Mavis, and the hate videos directed at KooKoo. We can argue all day about what Sky Mavis could have or could have not done over things the community is passionate about, and this publication has strived to be balanced in its reporting of Axie Infinity. But at the end of the day, hurling abusive comments against anyone is not encouraging any helpful discussion at all.

And without a doubt, it’s impossible to ignore the price declines across the entire crypto market. 

But Sky Mavis has been in this same situation before.

After being founded in 2018, a brutal three-year crypto winter followed. Axie Infinity had three hundred players at that time, one of those was me. While I was not fairly active in the Discord nor a very active player, it was easier to contact the Sky Mavis team for quotes when we have an article to publish about them. 

They said it was better to build during crypto bear markets because you attract more supporters than speculators, people who expect you to build to eventually ship a product out vs people who expect prices to moon in a month’s time. 

As Axie Infinity prepares to enter a new bear market that is promising to be much more brutal than before, if the meetup at VS Barcade is any indication, it is that Sky Mavis will once again choose to spend it with its supporters, but now with a product out, a still very large userbase, a network of creators, and massive name recall to tap into.
