Holiday Gift Guide 2022: VR Games to Give Your Favorite Meta Quest 2 Owner (Or Yourself)

Source Node: 1765459

Happy holidays everyone, and welcome to our official Meta Quest 2 gaming gift guide for 2022.

Maybe you’re thinking about giving a loved one their own Meta Quest 2 this year—or have one hidden in a closet right now. Maybe you surprised a loved one with Meta Quest 2 last December, and now you want to tuck some new VR games or experiences into their (digital) gift pile. Or hey, maybe you just want to buy some for yourself. (Go ahead, you deserve it.)

Whatever your situation, we’ve got plenty of recommendations for the people you hold dear. Below, we’ve rounded up some of 2022’s most exciting hits, from the heroic exploits of Marvel’s Iron Man VR to NFL PRO ERA’s simulation pigskin-tossing, Moss: Book II’s mouse-sized adventure to the dead-infested streets of The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution—and many, many more. We’ve also included a few evergreen favorites like Beat Saber and Walkabout Mini Golf for people who are just starting to build their VR collection (and our Meta Quest 2 Starter Kit has even more recommendations).

Marvel’s Iron Man VR

Even Super Heroes can’t always outrun the past. That’s a reality Tony Stark is forced to confront in Marvel’s Iron Man VR when his former life as an arms dealer comes back to haunt him. The very weapons he designed will be turned against him by Ghost, forcing Stark to decide whether saving himself is worth betraying everything he’s come to believe in. Step into Tony Stark’s iconic armor and master Iron Man’s unique flight and fighting capabilities as you confront Ghost’s army over Stark Mansion, in Shanghai, and around the world. We’ve been fans of Marvel’s Iron Man VR since its original release, and we’re excited that the talented teams at Camouflaj and Endeavor One—along with our partners at Sony Interactive Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment—could bring this incredible superhero experience to Meta Quest 2 as well.

Developer: Camouflaj, Endeavor One

Among Us VR reimagines the hit game of deception from a new first-person perspective. Explore the stars with your Crewmates—but beware, at least one of them is an Impostor intent on killing off everyone else. Online matches support 4 - 10 VR players ages 13+, so gather some friends, choose your favorite hat (grab the new hat packs for even more options), and get ready to learn which ones are a little too good at lying.

Beat Saber

Beat Saber kept the hits coming this year with new Music Packs from The Weeknd, Lizzo, and Fall Out Boy, plus the high energy Electronic Mixtape. But 2022’s biggest changes landed alongside the free OST5 (our fifth original soundtrack) update in March. In addition to six new songs, the OST5 update added Arc and Chain Notes, two twists on Beat Saber’s block-slashing mechanics that guide you through specific moves or require you to chop a series of blocks to maintain your streak. As Beat Games Lead Level Creator Josh “Freeek” Joynes explained at the time, Arc Notes allows the team to mimic sustained guitar notes and such, while Chain Notes can be used to better represent sequential sounds, like quick drum hits. It’s the first time the core Beat Saber gameplay has changed since launch, giving longtime players something new to master.

Vertical Robot’s acclaimed follow-up Red Matter 2 picks up in the aftermath of the original’s cliffhanger ending and expands on it with a story that spans the entire solar system. Circle ever closer to the heart of a hidden conspiracy and uncover the origins of the titular red matter itself, all while playing one of 2022’s most visually and technologically impressive VR games.

Plus an original soundtrack release and merch store. This has been a huge year for Walkabout Mini Golf. Arguably the biggest year, with the debut of courses based on Jim Henson’s Labyrinth and Cyan’s Myst interspersed among Mighty Coconut’s originals. Can the momentum continue? Signs point to yes, with Mighty Coconut kicking off a Jules Verne-themed trilogy in September with 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and two more Verne courses coming in 2023, along with more Lost Cities and entirely new packs. But why wait? Walkabout Mini Golf is already excellent, whether you’re getting in some after-work solo practice or catching up with friends and family with a side helping of casual competition.

The stakes are higher, resources scarcer, and the unstoppable Axeman stalks your every step. You might even need to explore after dark, when the Walkers are most active… It’ll take grit, creativity, and yes, maybe a miracle to survive both the dead and the living in The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution. Some of the townspeople will ask you to put away heavy objects or build massive structures, while others will want you to fling rockets into the sky or experiment with other strange technology. Resolution Games also leaned into the you-and-your-friends-around-a-table trappings for Heroes’ Hangout, introducing a social space dressed up as a basement refuge, complete with arcade games, a place to paint miniatures, an archery minigame, and more. It’s a tabletop lover’s dream space—though if you’d prefer something more familiar, you can also turn on Passthrough and play in your own living room.
