Civil IoT Taiwan: The guardian of air quality

We have all experienced one disaster after another in recent years, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the impact brought about by different kinds of extreme climates.

To help overcome the challenges brought about by environmental changes, and to enhance the ability and effectiveness of digital technology in environmental governance, the Taiwan Government launched ‘Civil IoT Taiwan’ in 2017, with the goal of promoting cooperation between local governments and private organisations. It aims to help them to work together to establish a sound environmental monitoring system, and drive the development of the digital economy with information, to create a ‘Digital Country, Smart Island’.

With the Government’s inter-ministerial cooperation, the Department of Industrial Technology commissioned the Industrial Technology Research Institute(ITRI) to develop environmental IoT sensing components. After passing tests conducted by the national laboratory, the technology was transferred to private enterprises for mass production. The domestic air quality micro sensor has a long service life in a high temperature and humid environment. It also adds temperature and humidity parameter compensation and correction, which not only improves accuracy, but also meets local needs. Utilising the advantages of Taiwan’s electronics manufacturing together with sensing equipment manufacturers, network equipment manufacturers etc., provides domestic and foreign customers with solutions to monitor air quality, both indoors and outdoors.

Among them, Askey Computer, a subsidiary of ASUS Group, is deeply involved in developing network communication and manufacturing electronic products. Its core technology is applied to multiple fields, including 5G/LTE, Internet of Things, Internet of Vehicles, and smart homes. In recent years, it not only carried out the plan of Civil IoT Taiwan, but also began to provide overall service solutions to meet the needs of local government. In addition to providing communication equipment for overseas telecom operators, Askey also makes use of its experience in the civil IoT to sell sensing equipment and services to overseas telecom operators and home appliance operators, aiming to improve family quality of life through air quality solutions.

This year, as for the home IoT, Askey Computer has cooperated with Verizon and home appliance manufacturer, Arcelik, in the European market, to create a revenue of up to 2 billion, and provide complete smart home services in the local market. Through the communication equipment made in Taiwan, such as IoT Gateway and WiFi Mesh, it created a home network system, and connects a variety of sensing equipment from Taiwan. Users can procure all the things to create a smart home and home security, including air quality, safety protection, energy saving, and elderly care, through mobile apps and platforms. Especially during the pandemic period, the indoor air quality sensor provides the principle that users can follow, and connects the air purifier and air conditioner to automatically activate via the smart device to purify the home environment when the air quality is in poor condition. The sales figures for solving air quality issues are more than 20 million this year, providing protection and assurance for air quality for many families.

Through Taiwan’s efforts and involvement in the Civil IoT Taiwan, Taiwanese businesses can provide complete solutions for both indoor and outdoor air quality. It can improve air circulation through real-time monitoring of indoor air quality, reduce the risk of pandemics and infectious diseases caused by high indoor CO2 concentration, or air pollution problems caused by pet hair, dust mites, or cooking fumes. Through monitoring outdoor air quality, we can acquire the information of outdoor air quality to provide local air quality forecasts and data visualisation for the public, and spare no effort to assist the public in making judgments and decisions. At the same time, it helps identify local pollution sources, and further assists relevant units in technology law enforcement to improve local air quality and eliminate the possibility of pollution.

In the future, we expect to be able to integrate the advantages of Taiwan’s products along with Askey’s communication equipment and network services, as well as micro air quality sensors made in Taiwan, to provide domestic and foreign purchasers with more complete air quality solutions. Through the sensing ability of the sensor, we can provide real-time and preventive monitoring services. Through the wisdom and power of Taiwan island, we hope to contribute to the world and work together on guarding the air quality of the world, to bring a better living environment for all people.
