The white paper is used as a sample document for a device called “Virtual Scanner II” for the image editing tool Image Capture, which is hidden or not installed for everyone by default.
Andy Baio happened to notice “Virtual Scanner II” while repairing a printer, and when he changed the media type from “Photo” to “Document”, the Bitcoin white paper was displayed.
According to Baio, you can check if the white paper has been saved by entering the following prompt (instructions) in Terminal, the macOS version of the command prompt.
open /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/VirtualScanner.app/Contents/Resources/simpledoc.pdf

He pointed out that when he shared the information with 10 friends who are using Macs, all of them were able to confirm it. The whitepaper was detected on all macOS versions from Mojave (10.14.0) to the current version (Ventura). On the other hand, it doesn’t seem to exist before High Sierra (10.13).
“I found very little information about this on the internet,” Baio said, noting that a designer had posted on Twitter about the Bitcoin on macOS whitepaper in November 2020.

Weirdly, there’s also a PDF of the original Bitcoin white paper: pic.twitter.com/JjPnI4fyzc

It is not known why the Bitcoin whitepaper was chosen as the sample page and why it is hidden. Baio also pointed out that “it’s a lightweight multi-page PDF that may not have been intended for end-users to see.”
