Special aid tool for Israel approved for Taiwan’s use, but not Ukraine

WASHINGTON ― President Joe Biden’s foreign aid request for Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific remains stalled on Capitol Hill, inhibiting funding for a unique mechanism that could help U.S. allies and partners build up their own defense industries.Until recently, Israel was the only country with a special privilege called offshore procurement, which has allowed it to use a portion of its Foreign Military Financing, or FMF, grants to invest in its own defense-industrial base instead of purchasing weapons from U.S. defense contractors as other recipients are required to do.Congress approved

Image: JAXA.One of two engines powering a Japanese moon lander during its descent to the surface Jan. 19 suffered a malfunction of some sort just 160 feet above the lunar surface that sharply reduced its power, the Japanese space agency said Thursday. Will 2024 Be The Year Of Layered Realities?

Systems & Design OPINION A decade on from big expectations, AR/VR still holds potential. January is always the month of predictions. Our team has already contributed to Semiconductor Engineering’s 2023 Look Back and 2024 Outlook. My personal tradition has become to combine the outlook with a look back at what industry experts thought of a decade ago. While this involved a trip to my garage to pick up the respective January IEEE Spectrum issue a decade ago, the new reality is that all of this is easy to do online.

Think the Sentinel nuclear program is pricey? Try living without it.

The U.S. Air Force’s announcement regarding revised cost estimates for the Sentinel ground-based strategic deterrent program must not change the ultimate vector for modernizing the nation’s aging force of 1970s-era Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. Our nation requires an effective means to deter nuclear threats. This is why the United States has maintained a credible nuclear triad — nuclear-capable bombers, submarines and ICBMs — since the early days of the Cold War. It is time to modernize this enterprise, with the Sentinel program a key component of that effort.Ironically, if strategic
